RISKS

Some men have a higher risk of developing prostate cancer than others. Knowing your risk can help you make an informed decision about speaking to your GP and considering a PSA blood test.

➢ Your risk may be higher:
  • Age — risk increases as men get older.
  • Family history — particularly if your father or brother has had prostate cancer.
  • Black ethnicity — Black men have a higher risk of developing prostate cancer.
  • Genetics — certain inherited gene changes, including BRCA1 and BRCA2, can increase risk.
➢ Can lifestyle affect risk?

Maintaining a healthy weight, staying physically active and eating a balanced diet are important for your overall health. Research also suggests that being overweight or obese may be associated with a greater risk of aggressive or advanced prostate cancer.

You cannot change your age, ethnicity, family history or inherited genes — but you can know your risk and discuss it with your GP.
